The workshop brought together leaders in IPC, clinicians, healthcare planners, architects, engineers, contractors and estates teams to address how the built environment can better support patient safety, save the NHS money and reduce the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Organised by the Society’s Special Interest Group, BEIPI, in collaboration with the Institute of Healthcare Engineering & Estate Management (IHEEM), the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), Architects for Health (AfH) and the NHS New Hospitals Programme (NHP), the workshop created a rare opportunity for cross-sector collaboration at a critical time for healthcare infrastructure.
Participants explored how capable they felt in their current role to influence better infection prevention outcomes through built environment decisions, what the future may look like in ten year’s time if infection prevention was world class and what steps it might take to get there.
The energy and engagement throughout the workshop demonstrated a clear appetite for continued collaboration. Attendees highlighted the value of hearing perspectives outside their usual disciplines and welcomed the opportunity to contribute to a collective, preventative approach to hospital safety.
Following the workshop a report will be released, capturing key insights, recommendations and next steps to support the sector in embedding infection prevention into healthcare built environment decision-making.
BEIPI will also continue to build on this momentum through future workshops and initiatives, including:
