Frequently asked questions

Am I eligible?

Members of the society who are presenting at an event are eligible to apply.  Priority will be given to non-career grade members who are presenting studies that are within our scientific remit

HIS only awards travel grants where the topic being presented is within the Society’s scientific remit of the Infection Prevention and Control of nosocomial infections. The abstract selected for presentation at the conference must have enough content on healthcare acquired infections and IPC to fit this remit.

Previous recipients of a travel grant will not be eligible to re-apply for 2 years.

Multiple applications from the same department or research group will not be accepted.

What costs will you fund?

This grant can be used to contribute towards registration fees, travel, accommodation and/or childcare/ companion costs and subsistence. These costs must be claimed in arrears of the event and expenses must be fully supported by receipts.  All expenses must be in line with the HIS expenses policy.

Online events:  we are accepting travel grant applications to cover registration costs for online events, where the delegate is presenting their work. A maximum registration fee of £350 can be claimed.

For hybrid events where the delegate is presenting and attending face to face for an element of the programme, they are eligible to apply for a full travel grant.

It is expected that the grant holder will have business travel insurance provided their institution.

We encourage sustainable travel and are committed to supporting environmentally responsible practices. We will not routinely support air travel where alternative transport modes are an option. Preference will be given to applications that prioritise sustainable travel options, such as train or bus travel, carpooling, or other low-emission transportation methods. Applicants are encouraged to outline their travel plans and indicate how they align with this commitment to sustainability.

How do I submit my report and expenses?

You should submit your report using this template and expenses claim form within three months of the event.

Expenses will not be paid until your report has been received and acknowledged by HIS.

How about hybrid or online only events?

Face-to-face and hybrid events: for hybrid events where the delegate is presenting and attending face to face for an element of the programme, they are eligible to apply for a full travel grant.

Online-only events:  we are accepting travel grant applications to cover registration costs for online events, where the delegate is presenting their work. A maximum registration fee of £350 can be claimed. If a delegate is attending a hybrid event as an online participant, they are still eligible to apply for registration costs.
