Become a Trustee at HIS

The Society is mid way through the delivery of our 2025-2030 strategy

We are inviting members to play an active role in shaping our future and helping us expand our activities and bring our ambitious plans to life.

HIS members are invited to submit a self-nomination to serve as a trustee of the Society from January 2027.

In addition, we are particularly seeking candidates who:

  1. Have an interest in IPC workforce planning
  2. Have an interest in contributing to the Society's finance committee
  3. Have an interest in/knowledge of sustainability in healthcare

To apply

Please complete a Trustee application form and email it to Sarah Adibi CEO (sarah.adibi@his.org.uk). Applications should also include a completed trustee eligibility form.

Deadline: Monday 10 August 2026

Following this open call, all candidate applications will be assessed according to the skills gaps identified, and the final selection will be made by HIS Council.

Time commitment

Trustees attend Council meetings in order to help to develop the HIS strategy, and ensure compliance and accountability for finances, legal and governmental obligations are met. The typical anticipated time commitment for trustees is attendance and advance preparation (reading) for:

  • Council meetings - take place four times per year
  • Annual Away Day (normally in March)
  • Annual General Meeting
  • Finance Committee meetings - take place for times per year (only for the trustees who are members of the Finance Committee)

One Council meeting per year is online. Personal attendance is encouraged for the other three, although virtual attendance is possible.

HIS has an experienced and committed staff team who undertake all operational work so that trustees can focus on the strategic activities of the Society.

Many Trustees also choose to be involved in other Society activities, such as planning educational events and guideline development, all of which is coordinated and supported by the staff team but attendance will be required at the relevant committee meetings.

Previous experience in a trustee role is not essential, as a full induction will take place.

Trustees who serve as ordinary members of Council do so for a three year term of office.
